  • Cord Blood - what does it mean ?

Cord blood is the blood that remains when the umbilical cord is severed from the placenta. The Cord blood can be collected and used in a later stage of life to cure diseases such as leukemia.  By now you muct be thinking how can this be possible from the same umbilical cord that some years ago was being discarded at the birth of the child.

Well now with medical advances it is a widely known fact that cord blood contains stem cells and these stem cells can transform in any other type of cells. Banking your baby’s blood and stem cells in a cord blood bank provides you with a type of insurance. Hopefully, you will not need to access your baby’s stem cells to address a medical problem, but using a cord blood bank can give you peace of mind that this valuable resource is there if you need it.

Cord blood banking is quite expensive though for the time being, most of the time private cord blood banks require an initial deposit of 1000-2000$ and a monthly fee of about 10-20$. But if ever your child has some serious disease, the stored cord blood will be almost priceless to you. You wont have to find any donor and you will be almost sure that the body wont reject that particular transplant.
